A world worth protecting

The city of Eridu celebrates beneath two suns.

Read the excerpt

Eridu was already awake around them. Festival canopies unfurled from the buildings in bands of saffron and deep green. Cooling mist drifted over the lower market, carrying the scents of hot grain, bitterleaf, rainstone oil and the sweet resin burned for returning travelers. Above the avenue, transit ribbons slid soundlessly between towers whose pale faces were turning gold.

The Celestial Spire stood at the city’s heart, too tall to take in at once. Its lower terraces were gardens; its middle reaches housed ministries, observatories and the Hall of Continuance; its crown vanished into the brightening sky. For the Festival of the Two Suns, the entire eastern face had become an image field. It showed Nibiru as seen from the outer moons: a banded world of rust-red continents, blue-black seas and cloud systems shining like hammered silver.

The image changed. Ancient ships rose from a burning valley. Then came the first orbital habitats, the irrigation of the Southern Waste, the flowering of the polar gardens, the founding of cities on three moons. A thousand years of struggle had become forty seconds of triumph.

No defeats appeared.

A record that should not exist

Kaela, an archivist, notices something wrong with a memorial record.

Read the excerpt

Kaela turned back to the Spire. Among the ascending names, one line flickered and disappeared.

She waited for it to return.

It did.

Probably a fault in the display. The city was carrying more data than usual, with festival images filling every screen and public channel.

Still, she searched the name in her lens.

The Archive returned two records.

The first said the traveler had died sixty-one years ago.

The second said no person by that name had ever existed.

Before Kaela could open either file, the contradiction vanished. One record remained: death, sixty-one years ago, memorial verified.

She copied it into her private storage.

The vibration beneath the avenue strengthened.

It lasted no more than two heartbeats. The lanterns trembled in the air. A cup walked to the edge of a vendor’s counter and fell.

People cheered, mistaking it for part of the ceremony.

Kaela looked toward the distant foundations where her brother was working.

Her wristband remained dark.
